Friends,
As most of you know, I was a Southern Baptist Pastor for about 20 years. Before I
ever went to college, I pastored my first church. I was a very strong fundamentalist
who believed that the Bible was infallible. If the Bible said it, that settled it and I
preached it and I thought that I had it all figured out. One of the best things that
happened to me was going to college and being exposed to new thoughts and ideas.
For many years I was involved in what is known as an Evangelical Church. Our
mission was to go out and convince people that they were sinners and that they
needed to be washed by the blood. We did that in many ways by reaching out to
those in need. Though the intentions and work accomplished were good, the
message behind it was no longer mine. We were so busy trying to get people
"SAVED" that we failed in helping them grow in spirit.
In Unity I have found my answer. It is now my mission to acknowledge God’s spirit
within all people. To be ‘saved’ in Unity terms is to know our oneness with God and
our true divine nature. That message is the foundation of our outreach programs. Our
chaplains affirm the Christ Spirit as they pray with us. Our daily and Sunday radio
programs transmit our positive message to the CSRA. The Twelve step and other
groups that meet at our facilities give a message of self worth and responsibility for
our choices. Our outreach to the soup kitchen and supplying staples to shelters is a
way that we share our good with others. As we reach out to others we are blessed
with a greater understanding of our oneness with God and all of creation.
Many people are in need of the message we have to give. Our message is one of
empowerment, love, and compassion. Unity as an organization is reaching out to all
of its churches to unite in not only getting our positive message out to others, but
exemplifying it. In the next few years we will be embarking on a journey with The
Association of Unity Churches to become more of the wonderful message we have to
share. Together we can do so much more.
So remember that wherever you are, you are the Christ Spirit and you are leading
people to the truth by your life. You are the message!
